LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – The Carnival Cruise line released that Lafayette native, Juwanna Brooks, went overboard the Carnival Triumph this past weekend.
This tragedy on the sea leaves some wondering how safe cruise ships really are.
“Cruises are safe. And they are very fun, they are meant for people to enjoy an adventure,” says local travel agent Cat Terrebonne.
Terrebonne has worked with travelers for the past twenty years.
She says tragedies happen but they don’t happen often.
Normal procedure on a cruise ship is to conduct a mandatory drill at the beginning of every cruise.
These drills teach passengers what to do in emergency situations.
Terrebonne says most cruise ships follow the same rules.
“Railings on all cruise ships are around 4 feet high. So for me, I’m 5 foot it comes to about right here and on the balconies as well,” she explains.
Terrebonne’s biggest piece of advice for travels is to plan ahead.
She says, “When you book a cruise or a vacation there so many things that you can anticipate and be prepared for so that smart traveling. It’s always good to be a smart traveler.”
